Why Collectors Are Drawn to Atmospheric Landscape Paintings
As an artist who also likes to collect art for my walls I feel like a common appeal with atmospheric landscape paintings is that they can convey a sense of mystery or mood that allows the viewer to project some of their own thoughts, ideas and experiences on them. A landscape that shows a forest path leading somewhere the viewer can’t see allows them to create a story of their own with their own emotional interpretation.
Atmospheric landscapes can also provide a sense of escapism for viewers if the person has never been somewhere like that before. If they aren’t able to travel to the location in the painting they can have the painting as a source of inspiration for somewhere they would like to go in the future. I know I like to look at art on my wall of somewhere I would like to see in real life. It gives me something to work towards and admire even during periods when travel is not able to be done.
Even when I look at my own collection I have these same thoughts because I remember the feeling of seeing them in real life and experiencing them for myself. I look at them and want to go back again down the line and see more than I was able to the first time. I hope that urge gets shared with the people who view my art too!
