Painting the Highlands: Capturing the Wild Beauty of Scotland's Rugged Landscapes

The Highlands in Scotland were a breathtaking experience. Admittedly we only got to spend a couple days exploring, but what we did see was very memorable and inspiring. The roads wound through passes that were lined with mountains, valleys, lochs, and towns abundant with beautiful older houses that fit in with the surrounding landscape perfectly. We saw many different autumnal flowers and plants as well as farmland rich with sheep and Highland cows.

Because we visited in the fall the colors were starting to change from vibrant green to a more muted green and in some places the leaves seemed to be getting ready to change. They paired wonderfully with the purple heather sprinkled through the landscape.

Compared to other landscapes that I’ve painted, and some of the ones from this same series the landscapes in the Highlands were often more dramatic. There were wide stretches of ocean and water from various lochs, and also the towering cliffs that stood over the valleys as we passed through.

The Highlands were an amazing experience, and I hope the paintings I created from what I saw during that trip were inspirational to the viewer and showed how Scotland’s landscapes, from the city, to the smaller villages, and the surrounding highlands , all have something to show and be appreciated.
