There are so many things to enjoy about painting in the Philadelphia area, whether it is in the city itself or in the neighborhoods around the edge of city. Over the past 10’ish years I have created a number of paintings set in Philly, and there is something to admire about all of them.
There is such a diverse assortment of architectural and natural settings in Philly. From the rowhomes of South Philly, to the brownstones and brick buildings of Center and Old City, to the colorful Victorian houses in West Philly, there is something to intrigue the eye all over the city.
Besides the architecture, there are also so many small and large natural moments to see and enjoy as well, from the window boxes and sidewalk gardens outside residential buildings, to the parks inside the city, and the larger parks on the edges of the city.
As you get farther from Center City and closer to the edge of the city, you’ll start seeing more nature, and it begins to feel like you’re in a different place. I’ve painted scenes from the Schuylkill River near Fairmount Park, the Wissahickon Park, and I have started creating paintings inspired by a trip to the Morris Arboretum, which is just barely inside the city boundaries. Just walking around the Arboretum makes you feel as if you are in a different place. There is so much nature, and the rush and sounds of the city are so removed.
Through my paintings I seek to interest the viewer with these beautiful landscapes. I want to express the joy of enjoying your surroundings, whether it’s in a busy city or a quieter more secluded area. There’s so much opportunity to see both types of place, even in a city like Philadelphia, where your first thought may just be of the city center and concrete and more urban scenery. Taking the time to explore the city and where you live can open your eyes to all of the beautiful sites you can see and enjoy.
